Syntec Optics eyes defense market under new NDAA optical systems mandate
Syntec Optics Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: OPTX) announced it expects to benefit from new National Defense Authorization Act requirements for domestic sourcing of optical systems. The FY2026 NDAA, signed into law, mandates the Department of Defense develop strategies to source glass and optical systems within the United States and eliminate reliance on optical systems from adversary nations by January 1, 2030.
The Rochester, New York-based manufacturer said its U.S.-based production capabilities position it to serve defense technology integrators required to comply with the new legislation. The company provides optical elements, optomechanicals, thin-film coatings, nano-machining, optical assemblies, and opto-electronic assemblies from its domestic facility.
Section 834 of the NDAA specifically requires mandatory development of strategies to source glass and optical systems within the United States. Defense program customers must now inventory all optical bills of materials, map the country of origin for every critical processing step, and transition to domestic sources to meet the 2030 deadline.
"The FY2026 NDAA validates our long-standing commitment to American manufacturing. The 'covered nations' restriction specifically for glass and optical systems is beneficial," said Dean Rudy, CFO at Syntec Optics, according to the company's press release.
The company created a new business development position dedicated to following Department of Defense directives and engaging with military, government, and private sector leaders, according to Matt Carey, VP of business development.
Syntec Optics operates as a custom optics and photonics manufacturer with capabilities spanning various manufacturing processes. The company serves defense, biomedical, satellite communications, and data center markets.
