US pledges over $200 million in aid to Red Cross agencies

GENEVA, July ‌23 (Reuters) - ​The ​United States will give over $200 million in ‌aid to the International Committee ⁠of the Red Cross and ‌the International Federation ‌of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, its diplomatic ​mission said in a statement on Thursday.

"Today's contributions ⁠support organizations that respond quickly when ​disasters strike, provide unparalleled access to people in need ​in conflict settings, ‌and leverage preexisting worldwide disaster and humanitarian ⁠response infrastructure," the statement said.

Under U.S. President Donald Trump, ⁠Washington has cut back donations to ​many aid groups, saying it wants to focus on "hyper-prioritised life-saving humanitarian ‌assistance." Still, it remains the world's top ‌donor and pledged $1.8 billion ⁠to the ‌United Nations ​in May.
