BANGKOK, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Anutin Charnvirakul stood at a rally in Thailand's capital Bangkok last month and declared that his Bhumjaithai Party should be the automatic choice for any patriotic Thai in Sunday's general election.
"I promise to you all that I will safeguard Thailand with my life," the 59-year-old politician said. "Just choose Bhumjaithai to guard the country, to help safeguard all of our land."

WASHINGTON, Feb 8 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Sunday he would not expect the Federal Reserve to move quickly to shrink its balance sheet, even under Fed chief nominee Kevin Warsh, who has criticized the U.S. central bank's bond purchases.

BEIRUT, Feb 8 (Reuters) - A five-storey residential building collapsed in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Sunday, trapping an unknown number of people under the rubble, security sources said.
Rescue workers and residents had so far recovered three people alive from under the rubble of the building in Tripoli's Bab al-Tabbaneh neighbourhood, Lebanon's National News Agency reported.

WASHINGTON, Feb 8 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent praised Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi as a great ally after her ruling coalition's landslide election victory on Sunday, noting her endorsement by President Donald Trump.
"She is a great ally, great relationship with the president," Bessent said in an interview on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures" program. "And when Japan is strong, the U.S. is strong in Asia."
