ATHENS (Reuters) - The Paris 2024 Olympic flame sailed for France on Saturday on board a three-masted ship to mark the final sprint of preparations ahead of the Olympic Games opening ceremony on July 26.

The "Belem" left the port of Piraeus in the morning for an 11-day voyage and will arrive in the southern city of Marseille, founded by the Greek settlers of Phocaea around 600 BC, on May 8.

Ukraine drones target two refineries, airfield in Russia's Krasnodar region, Kyiv source says Apr 27, 2024 05:09AM

KYIV (Reuters) - Ukraine attacked the Ilsky and Slavyansk oil refineries in Russia's Krasnodar region with drones early on Saturday, causing fires at the facilities, a Ukrainian intelligence source told Reuters.

The attack was conducted by the SBU security service, the source said. Ukrainian drones also targeted the Kushchevsk military airfield in the same region overnight, the source added.

Earthquake of magnitude 6.5 strikes Japan's Bonin Islands, USGS says Apr 27, 2024 05:01AM

(Reuters) -An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 struck Japan's Bonin Islands, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said on Saturday.

The quake was at a depth of 503.2 km (312.7 miles), USGS said.

The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami warning from the quake, based on available data.

LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. intelligence agencies have determined that Russian President Vladimir Putin probably didn't order opposition politician Alexei Navalny killed at an Arctic prison camp in February, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

Russian court places Forbes journalist Mingazov under house arrest, says RIA Apr 27, 2024 02:53AM

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian court has ordered a journalist for the Russian edition of Forbes, Sergei Mingazov, to be placed under house arrest, Russia's state-owned RIA news agency reported on Saturday.

Mingazov was detained on Friday on suspicion of spreading false information about the Russian army, his magazine said at the time.
