Ericsson expands manufacturing in India to make antennas

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Sweden's Ericsson is planning to manufacture all its telecom antennas for the Indian market in the South Asian country, the company said on Tuesday.

Demand from India's telecom companies surged in 2023, as Bharti Airtel and Jio, the telecom unit of Reliance Industries, started to scale up 5G services, and cushioned a slowdown of orders from the United States, Ericsson's top market.

Ericsson, which started manufacturing in India in 1994, will localise all its passive antenna production for the Indian market by June, it said in a statement. It also has manufacturing facilities in Mexico, Romania and China.

The company expects to export a significant portion of the antennas manufactured in India after meeting domestic needs, it said.

Antenna manufacturing will take place in Gurgaon together with Ericsson's local partner VVDN Technologies, a spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Ericsson's logistics hub in Pune will support distribution and supply chain operations across the region, he added.
