Chile's Boric rules out responding to trade tensions with retaliation

BRASILIA (Reuters) -Chilean President Gabriel Boric said on Wednesday that the Andean American country will not respond to global trade tensions with "loud" declarations or retaliation, but rather through deeper regional integration.

Boric called for greater unity across Latin America, especially South America, emphasizing the need to work toward streamlined customs procedures and promote investment aimed at improving logistics throughout supply chains.

"We are not going to respond with retaliation, we are going to respond with greater integration," Boric told the Brazil-Chile Business Forum in Brasilia.

Boric said the so-called Capricorn Bioceanic Route - a land corridor connecting Brazilian ports on the Atlantic to Chilean ports on the Pacific - represents one of the most promising opportunities for advancing regional integration.

He emphasized the country's privileged access to the Pacific and Asian markets, noting that Chile is now engaged in talks for a trade agreement with India

Speaking at the same event, Brazilian Planning Minister Simone Tebet estimated that the infrastructure works required on the Brazilian side to fully integrate the Bioceanic Route, which also crosses through Paraguay and Argentina, should be completed within two years.
