New US postal chief confident agency will be able to preserve independence Jul 17, 2025 01:17PM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -New U.S. Postmaster General David Steiner told employees he is confident the Postal Service will be able to demonstrate it can operate successfully as an independent agency.

"I am convinced that a strength of the Postal Service resides in our structure as a self-financing independent entity of the executive branch, functioning much like a business but with a public service mission" Steiner said in a message to employees.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said he is confident the administration will defeat any lawsuit challenging the department's decision to rescind $4 billion in U.S. government funding for California's High-Speed Rail project.

SARAJEVO (Reuters) -Slovenia declared two far-right Israeli cabinet ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, persona non grata on Thursday, the first European Union country to do so, Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said.

The government accused Israel's national security minister Ben-Gvir and finance minister Smotrich - both West Bank settlers - of making "genocidal statements" and inciting violence against Palestinians.

US government hands over Medicaid recipients' personal data to ICE, AP reports Jul 17, 2025 01:03PM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials will be given access to the personal data of the nation's 79 million Medicaid enrollees to track down immigrants who may not be living legally in the U.S., the Associated Press reported on Thursday.

Britain boosts computing power in $1.3 billion AI drive Jul 17, 2025 01:02PM

LONDON (Reuters) -Britain set out its plan to invest 1 billion pounds ($1.34 billion) in computing infrastructure to drive the development of artificial intelligence, which will increase its public compute capacity 20 fold over the next five years.

The race to develop AI is intensifying, with the United States, China and India emerging as front runners, putting pressure on Europe to make up lost ground.
