TOKYO (Reuters) - U.S. hedge fund Elliott Management Corp has bought a stake in Sumitomo Corp worth several tens of billions of yen, a person familiar with the situation said on Tuesday.
The purchase follows Warren Buffett's closely watched investment in the Japanese trading house.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's coast guard said on Monday it "expelled" a Philippine coast guard ship and another vessel from waters adjacent to the Scarborough Shoal, Chinese state media reported.
The coast guard did not provide additional information, according to the report from Chinese state media broadcaster CCTV, but the incident was the latest to occur between the two countries at the disputed atoll in the South China Sea.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - KFC Malaysia has temporarily closed outlets in the country, citing challenging economic conditions, after local media reported that the closings were because of boycotts over the fast food chain's perceived links to Israel.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Rapid disinflation and resilient growth will help Asia Pacific achieve a "soft landing" even though economic expansion is expected to slow over the next two years, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Tuesday.
While the region grew 5% last year, growth is expected to slow to 4.5% this year and 4.3% in 2025, the IMF said in a report.

HAVANA (Reuters) - The United States on Monday blasted a Cuban court's decision to sentence a group of protesters to as many as 15 years in jail, calling the recent judgment "unconscionable" and "outrageous."
The protests, which took place in the small eastern Cuban port city of Nuevitas in the summer of 2022, flared during a time when power outages had grown severe in the region, pushing hundreds of frustrated citizens to take to the streets.
