South Korea says video shows North Korea's failed satellite launch May 27, 2024 08:09PM

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea released video footage on Tuesday that its military said showed the moment North Korea's latest attempt at launching a satellite ended in failure.

The one-minute black-and-white video provided by the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) showed what appeared to be an explosion in the sky followed by flashes.

The footage was filmed by an observation device on a South Korean patrol vessel, the JCS said.

Japan net external assets hit record high in 2023, remains world's top creditor May 27, 2024 07:49PM

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's net external assets rose to a record 471.3 trillion yen ($3 trillion) in 2023, increasing for a sixth straight year, as a weak yen and overseas corporate acquisitions boosted the value of its foreign assets, the Ministry of Finance said on Tuesday.

Peru prosecutors file graft complaint against president May 27, 2024 07:03PM

LIMA (Reuters) -Peru's attorney general's office on Monday presented a so-called constitutional complaint against President Dina Boluarte in a case involving her use of luxury watches, a national scandal that could lead to removal proceedings.

The formal accusation comes as the leader's popularity has sunk to a new low according to polls.

Brazil plans to raise minimum cigarette price, source says May 27, 2024 06:09PM

BRASILIA (Reuters) -Brazil's finance ministry plans to raise the minimum cigarette price to offset losses from tax benefits granted to companies in some sectors and small municipalities, a government source told Reuters on Monday.

The hike is expected to be part of a package to compensate for nearly 26 billion reais ($5.03 billion) in revenue loss from the exemption of payroll taxes approved by Congress in December, the source said.
