MOSCOW (Reuters) - Vladimir Putin welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday for talks in the Kremlin that Moscow hopes will provide a diplomatic boost for the Russian leader at a key moment in the war with Ukraine.

(Reuters) -European shares climbed on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump signalled progress toward a first trade deal in his global tariff dispute, boosting market sentiment.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index was up 0.3%, as of 0707 GMT. Other regional indexes were also trading in positive territory, except for Spain, which fell 0.4%.

KYIV (Reuters) - Ukraine has discussed ways to pressure Russia into agreeing to a 30-day ceasefire with U.S., French, British and German senior officials, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's top aide said on Thursday, part of a flurry of diplomacy to try to end the war.

LONDON (Reuters) -The British pound was steady on Thursday after a report said that U.S. President Donald Trump was set to announce a trade deal between the U.S. and Britain, with the market's focus turning to an expected rate cut from the Bank of England later in the day.
Sterling initially climbed 0.5% against the dollar after the New York Times report on a possible trade deal before trimming gains to trade flat on the day at $1.3287 as of 0645 GMT.
