September Retails Sales Show Solid Gains

Same store sales or comp sales, whatever you prefer to call them, were announced today with some company's reporting outrageously strong numbers and others reporting figures that are relatively embarrassing.
Overall retail sales rose 5.8 percent in the month of September, ahead of the 4.9 percent gain that Retail Metrics was forecasting. Retail metrics highlights that the upside was driven by stronger than expected sales in the teen segment and apparel stores. Teen sales rose 10.2 percent year over year in September while apparel sales increased 3.1 percent. Department store same store sales rose 3.9 percent while the specialty apparel segment witnessed a 2.9 percent increase. Discounter stores increased same store sales by 2.7 percent and drug stores rose 2.6 percent. Retail Metrics notes that 63 percent of retail chains topped their expectations.
Top performers, based on same store sales for the month of September, include Perfumania Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: PERF) with a 11.3 percent gain, Limited Brands (NYSE: LTD) with a 11 percent gain, Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN) with a 10.7 percent gain, and Buckle (NYSE: BKE) with a 10.3 percent gain. Mega-retailer Target (NYSE: TGT) posted a gain of 5.3%.
The biggest losers, in terms of same store sales for the month of September, include Gap (NYSE: GAP) with a 4 percent loss, Cato Corp. (Nasdaq: CATO) with a 3 percent loss, Stein Mart (Nasdaq: SMRT) with a 1.7 percent loss, Stage Stores (NYSE: SSI) with a 0.7 percent loss, J.C. Penny (NYSE: JCP) with a 0.6 percent loss, and Wet Seal (Nasdaq: WTSLA) with a 0.3 percent loss.
Other companies that fell between the biggest winners and losers include Saks (NYSE: SKS) with a 9.3 percent increase, bebe stores (Nasdaq: BEBE) with a 7 percent increase, Ross Stores (Nasdaq: ROST) with a 5 percent increase, Macys (NYSE: M) with a 4.9 percent increae, TJX Companies (NYSE: TJX) with a 4 percent increase, Duckwall-Alco (Nasdaq: DUCK) with a 3 percent increase, Dillard’s Inc. (NYSE: DDS) with a 3 percent increase, and Fred’s (Nasdaq: FRED) with a 1.1 percent increase.
