Retail sales data for the month of November really missed expectations Tuesday morning.

Data from the U.S. Department of Commerce showed a 0.2 percent increase in November sales, compared to a 0.6 percent jump expected by the Street. The number was down from an upwardly-revised reading of 0.6 percent for October

Consumers spent on autos, fashion, and electronics, while saying "noJ" to eating out or buying groceries.

Auto sales in October rose 3 percent to a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of 13.6 million, the best level since August 2009. Tuesday's data shows sales at auto dealers increased from a 0.8 percent gain last month to a 1.3 percent rise.

Around the sector: Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) shares are 4.4 percent lower Tuesday while shares of Macy's (NYSE: M) are about 4.2 percent lower. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSE: XRT) is down 1.8 percent at last check.
