RailAmerica, Inc. (NYSE: RA) reported that its total freight carloads for the month ended July 31, 2010 were 73,071, up 4.7% from 69,805 in July 2010. These results exclude the discontinued Ottawa Valley Railway operation.

The Company had increased shipments in July 2010 in nine out of twelve commodity groups compared to July 2009. Much of the increase was due to shipments of Metallic Ores and Metals, Chemicals and Agricultural Products. Metallic Ores and Metals carloads increased across all regions. Chemical volumes were up primarily due to increased shipments in the Midwest, West and Southeast regions. Agricultural Products increased primarily due to higher shipments in the Central region. The largest decline was in the Other commodity group. Other carloads declined primarily due to lower shipments in the Northeast and Southeast.

RailAmerica, Inc. owns and operates short line and regional freight railroads in North America, operating a portfolio of 40 individual railroads with approximately 7,400 miles of track in 27 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces.
