McDonald's (MCD) Reports 5.3% Rise in January Comps

McDonald's Corp. (NYSE: MCD) posted strong same store sales on Tuesday for January, pushing shares higher in premarket trade.

The world's largest fast-food hamburger chain reported global same store sales last month rose 5.3 percent as the company pushed its McCafe premium coffee products and renewed popularity in its Chicken McNuggets.

In the U.S., comparable sales rose 3.1 percent in January, while the key business indicator rose 7 percent in Europe. The Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa region saw comps rise 5.2 percent.

"We begin 2011 with a continued focus on our customers, building on our strong foundation of value, convenience, and menu variety," said McDonald's Chief Executive Officer Jim Skinner. "I am confident in our plans and our ability to keep innovating, investing and delivering what our customers want today and into the future."

System-wide sales increased 7.4 percent in January for McDonald's.

Shares of McDonald's are up 1 percent to $74.15 in premarket trade on Tuesday.
