March Retail Sales Look Strong (TGT) (M) (JCP)

As today is the first Thursday of the month, U.S. retailers issued retail sales results for the month of March.

While the majority of companies posted better-than-expected same-store sales figures for last month, a number of retailers marked drops in the closely-watched metric.

Retail Metrics' said retail sales for the month of March rose 2.2%, vs. the firm's estimate of down 0.5%.

Retailers in the Teen Apparel and Discount segments reported the strongest comparable sales.

Below is a summary of the monthly retail sales results:

  • Target (NYSE: TGT) - down 5.5%
  • Costco (Nasdaq: COST) - up 8%
  • JCPenney (NYSE: JCP) - down 0.3%
  • Macy's (NYSE: M) - up 0.9%
  • Gap (NYSE: GPS) - down 10%
  • Kohl's (NYSE: KSS) - down 6.5%
  • TJX (NYSE: TJX) - down 1%
  • Limited (NYSE: LTD) - up 14%
  • The Buckle (NYSE: BKE) - up 8.4%
  • Zumiez (Nasdaq: ZUMZ) - up 8.9%
  • Hot Topic (Nasdaq: HOTT) - down 5%
  • BJ's Wholesale (NYSE: BJ) - up 5.3%
  • Saks (NYSE: SKS) - up 11.1%
  • Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN) - up 5.1%
