Journal Communications (JRN) Reports Decline in April Revenues

Journal Communications, Inc. (NYSE: JRN) reports fourth period (ended April 27, 2008) revenues for its Publishing and Broadcast groups of $35.91 million decreased 5.3% compared to $37.93 million reported for the fourth period ended April 29, 2007. For the fourth period 2008, advertising revenues of $30.75 million decreased 6.3% compared to $32.81 million for the 2007 fourth period. Both periods contained 28 days.
At the Publishing segment, revenues at the daily newspaper and the community newspapers and shoppers totaled $19.23 million, down 6.2% compared to $20.50 million. Advertising revenue was $14.07 million, down 8.6% compared to $15.39 million. Circulation revenue of $3.92 million was down 2.0%. Other revenue of $1.24 million was up 11.4%.
At the daily newspaper, total advertising revenue was $11.33 million, down 9.6% compared to $12.54 million. Specifically, retail advertising revenue was down 4.1%, classified advertising revenue was down 18.1%, national advertising revenue of $0.60 million decreased 5.8% and direct marketing revenue of $0.22 million was down 9.8%.
Other revenue at the daily newspaper of $0.99 million was up 25.1% compared to $0.79 million. Total interactive advertising revenue at the daily newspaper, which is reflected in the various revenue categories, increased 21.3% to $1.20 million compared to $0.99 million.
At the Broadcasting segment, total revenue at the Company’s radio and television stations of $16.68 million decreased 4.3% compared to $17.42 million. At the television group, revenue decreased 3.4% to $10.49 million compared to $10.86 million, largely reflecting economic weakness in our growth markets of Las Vegas, Ft. Myers and Tucson, partially offset by an $0.11 million increase in political and issue advertising.
At the radio group, revenue of $6.19 million was down 5.7% compared to $6.57 million, reflecting softness in all of our radio markets except Omaha and a $0.14 million decrease in political and issue advertising.[SM]
