Car sales in Japan plunged nearly 40 percent in March as the earthquake and subsequent tsunami crippled consumer confidence on the island nation.

Automakers sold 279,389 cars in Japan last month, the largest year-over-year drop for the period, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association on Friday.

Several automakers in the country were forced to suspend production recently, including Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) and Honda Motor Corp. (NYSE: HMC).
