August 13, 2007 7:22 AM EDT
Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) (NYSE: GWR) reported traffic volumes for July 2007.

GWI's traffic in July 2007 was 71,924 carloads, a decrease of 3,399 carloads, or 4.5 percent, compared with July 2006. Excluding 1,339 carloads from GWI's Mexican operations which are currently being closed and liquidated due to damage caused by Hurricane Stan in October 2005, GWI's traffic in July 2007 was 70,585 carloads, a decrease of 2,053 carloads, or 2.8% compared with July 2006.

Same-railroad traffic in July 2007 decreased by 3,593 carloads, or 4.8 percent. Same-railroad traffic excluding GWI's Mexico Region in July 2007 decreased by 2,247 carloads, or 3.1%, compared to July 2006. The decrease was principally due to a decline in farm & food products traffic of 2,076 carloads as a result of reduced grain shipments in GWI's Australia Region caused by drought conditions that negatively impacted the 2006 grain harvest. Additionally in July, pulp & paper products traffic declined by 1,544 carloads primarily due to lower shipments in GWI's Oregon and Southern Regions. These decreases were partially offset by a 1,963 carload increase in minerals & stone traffic primarily due to increased shipments in GWI's New York/Pennsylvania and Australia Regions
