Barclays on Retail: 2011 Holiday Outlook: Ho Hum, Not Ho Ho
Analyst, Meredith Adler, said, "Holiday comps of 2.2-2.6% expected: The Barclays Capital retail team is projecting Holiday comps of 2.2-2.6%, compared to 2.7% last year. We expect consumers to continue to be somewhat strained by macro pressures. Of the 92 names in our collective Retail universe, we rate 41% as 1-Overweight, 48% as 2-Equal Weight and 9% as 3-Underweight (2% are Rating Suspended). For holiday 2011, we expect a 2-2.5% comp for Broadlines/Apparel, a 2-3% comp for the Food, Drug & Dollar Stores, a 2-2.5% comp for Hardlines, a 3% comp for Restaurants and a 1.9% comp for Softlines."
"Holiday store traffic likely to be lower y/y. ShopperTrak expects U.S. retail holiday sales to increase by 3.0% this year, lower than last year's gain, and store traffic to decrease by 2.2% y/y. Similarly, the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) is looking for holiday sales to increase 3.0%."
"Seasonal hiring could be flat to down y/y. In its 2011 Holiday Hiring Report, Challenger, Gray & Christmas predicts that seasonal hiring this year will be flat to slightly lower than the 627,600 positions registered during Oct-Dec 2010."
Some Retail Stores Include: Walgreen (NYSE: WAG), Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), Target (NYSE: TGT), Macy's (NYSE: M), Dollar Tree (Nasdaq: DLTR)
