Apple (AAPL) iPhone Hits 100K in China

The Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone has finally reached 100,000 units sold in China, 40 days after the release of the popular smartphone device as sales have picked up after a less than stellar start.

The figure still puts the sales of the iPhone in China, the world’s largest wireless market by subscribers, well behind the numbers seen by the smartphone in other big markets. Comparatively, the iPhone sold 270,000 units in the first day of release alone in the U.S.

In the first four days of release in China, 5,000 subscribers of China Unicom switched over to the iPhone. Even the 100,000 sold to date show little impact on a company that has 144,000 wireless subscribers.

One significant factor impacting the weak sales number is that the phone is selling in China in the range of $730 to $1020 for the 16-bit and 32-bit versions. The phone is far cheaper on the “gray market” where iPhones are being brought in through places such as Hong Kong. There is an estimated 2 million gray market versions of the device currently in use in China.

China Unicom is the second-largest wireless company in the country, behind China Mobile which is in talks to also offer the iPhone.

Shares of Apple are slightly up in the mid-day market at $197.99.
