Patented ZPOD Lubrication System Demonstrates Performance Across Operational Flight Envelope, Advancing Affordable Mass for the Warfighter

(ZPI), a leader in advanced fluid delivery systems for expendable and attritable platforms, today announced the successful advancement of its ZPOD technology following altitude testing at the Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) test facility. 

The ZPI engineering team executed many successful test runs on an engine OEM's 200 lbf class turbojet, covering a range of mission relevant flight conditions. Bearing temperatures recorded during testing were comparable to or lower than those observed with legacy lubrication systems, and post-test inspections by the engine OEM confirmed no signs of bearing degradation or concern.

Building on Navy Success

The altitude testing milestone represents the culmination of years of maturation supported by the U.S. Navy's Office of Naval Research (ONR) Phase 1 and Phase 2 SBIR programs, which funded early development and validation of the ZPOD's core technology. This latest effort marks the first time the ZPOD has been tested under representative altitude conditions at a government facility, and notably, on a second OEM engine platform following prior ground testing on a partner's turbojet engine. The successful integration across multiple engine platforms demonstrates the adaptability of the ZPOD architecture.

Enabling Affordable and Autonomous Mass

The ZPOD is an oil delivery system that replaces legacy fuel-oil mix lubrication in attritable turbojets. By eliminating the need to carry uncommitted fuel for lubrication, the ZPOD enables platforms to extend range, increase payload capacity, or reduce overall system weight.

As the Department of War accelerates its affordable mass initiatives to field large quantities of autonomous, expendable systems, ZPI is positioned at the intersection of performance and cost-effectiveness.
