Westlake University Welcomes New International Undergraduates

China, December 17, 2025 -- Not long ago, Westlake University sent out admission letters. Now it has opened its gates to welcome the incoming freshmen at the New Undergraduate Student Convocation this Sunday. Typically, students begin arriving the day before the event. However, this year the international students were the first to reach the Yungu Campus, arriving ahead of the larger cohort. For 2025, Westlake University has admitted 11 international undergraduates from the United States, Egypt, Germany, and Brazil. This marks the third consecutive year that Westlake has enrolled undergraduates globally, with notable growth in both the number and diversity of students.

Westlake seeks undergraduate candidates with strong research abilities and well-rounded academic qualities.Among this year’s new arrivals are two students who distinguished themselves at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), a prestigious U.S.-based competition for high school students in grades 9–12. Founded in 1950, ISEF is widely recognized for its scale and influence; many award recipients go on to attend leading universities, including Ivy League institutions. Muhammad El-Sherbiny, a graduate of Bergen County Academies in the United States, won First Award in Biomedical Engineering in 2023 and Third Award in 2024. During the past spring break, he visited Westlake University with his sister.

While on campus, he toured the Biomaterials and Regenerative Engineering Alliance Laboratory and consulted with Prof. Jian Yang, the head of the lab, regarding his high school research project. El-Sherbiny was particularly pleased to learn that Westlake supports undergraduates to participate in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, an area of strong interest to him. Another ISEF awardee is Mohamed Sakr, a graduate of Obour STEM School in Egypt, who won Second Award in Behavioral and Social Sciences in 2024. Earlier this year, while serving as a judge for ISEF’s special awards, Sakr met Westlake University Chair Professor Mohamad Sawan, an internationally renowned scholar in smart medical devices who is also a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Royal Society of Sciences of Canada, and IEEE. Sawan’s research areas, including diagnosis, prediction, and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, as well as brain–computer interfaces and artificial intelligence, align closely with Sakr’s academic interests.

Of all the international students, Andre Moraes, from Brazil, was the first to arrive. Soon after, Austin Ta and Benjamin Harvey, from BASIS schools in the United States, arrived with their families and spent several days visiting nearby cities.

Harvey is already familiar with the Yungu Campus. Last year, he attended the Westlake Pre-college Summer Program, where he spent two weeks at Westlake and worked closely with Lei Ren, a teaching assistant and member of the first undergraduate cohort. “Ben impressed me as a quiet but diligent student,” said Ren. “His group performed well in their experiments. I believe he has come to the right place.”

For his part, Sakr expressed a similar sentiment: “Westlake is the right place for me.”

As their studies at Westlake begin, the 11 international undergraduates will join their Chinese peers on campus. Together, they will embark on four years of learning and growth, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their academic journeys.
