Viptela Disrupts Enterprise Wide Area Networking in 2014
Customers in Healthcare, Retail and Finance, as well as Tier-1 Carriers Adopted Start-Up’s Technology for a Cost-effective and Agile WAN
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Viptela Inc., the Software-Defined WAN company, today announced that in less than one year since the introduction of its Secure Extensible Network (SEN) product, several Fortune 500 companies have adopted Viptela SEN for centrally managing and securing multiple networks that are critical to their business. In 2014, healthcare, retail and financial organizations deployed Viptela to address the cost, complexity and flexibility shortcomings of legacy wide area network (WAN) infrastructures. The Viptela SEN platform makes it possible to manage any mix of transport technologies as if they were a single system.
This strong enterprise uptake has been matched by equally robust interest among Global Tier-1 Carriers that want to use Viptela SEN to offer managed Software-Defined WAN (SD-WAN) services.

According to Gartner, Inc.: “The result, as evident from Gartner client inquiries, is that enterprise WAN connectivity has evolved in an ad hoc manner based on project-by-project needs into what often are multiple independent solutions… Network planners must design a WAN architecture that incorporates both the Internet and the MPLS in an integrated hybrid WAN solution in order to overcome these issues.1”
To meet growing domestic and international demand for its products, Viptela increased its workforce by 35 percent and established operations in APAC and EMEA last year. The company also established a technology partnership program that enables organizations to seamlessly plug third party services into their network such as cloud-based security services from Zscaler. In addition, Viptela was invited to join the Board of Directors of the Open Networking User Group (ONUG) SD-WAN sub group which focuses on helping enterprises solve their most pressing network challenges.
“The current enterprise WAN was designed and built for the client-server era when users were in offices and applications were in the data center. Today, workers are mobile and applications are increasingly in the cloud. The legacy WAN just can’t keep up,” said Amir Khan, CEO of Viptela. “Using a software overlay, Viptela enables organizations to unify, control and secure any combination of old and new networks, transport technologies and services. Viptela SEN makes enterprise WANs easier to manage, cheaper to operate, and inherently more reliable and secure.”
