Council Also Honors Doyal Family That Operated a Business in the City for 100 Years

VILLA RICA, Ga., Aug. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Villa Rica City Council reestablished the city's Historic Preservation Commission at its August 11, 2026, meeting and named four new members to the body which has been dormant since October 2023.

"One of the most important things we can do in our community is to honor and preserve our past," said Villa Rica Mayor Leslie McPherson.

Jackie Childress, Joseph Collins, Marilyn Glass and Angela O'Neal were named to the six-member commission providing a quorum for the organization which leads historic preservation in the city, overseeing historic properties and issuing certificates for dedicated historic districts.

"One of the most important things we can do in our community is to honor and preserve our past," said Villa Rica Mayor Leslie McPherson. "Reestablishing our Historic Preservation Commission will provide the leadership we need to make sure that historic properties and artifacts are identified and maintained."

The Villa Rica Council also honored the Doyal family, long-time Villa Rica merchants, who owned the J. L. Doyal Merchandise Store and E. T. Doyal & Sons for more than 100 years. The family closed their business on July 31, 2026, when Jerry Doyal retired.

Mr. Doyal served on and chaired the Villa Rica Downtown Development Authority and his wife, Alisa, served as Villa Rica city clerk and Main Street manager. "The Doyal family have been pillars in our community for five generations, not only as businesspeople, but also serving in our government," said Mayor McPherson. "We owe them a huge debt of gratitude for their service and commitment to the city."

In other action, the council approved:

  • The annual city employee benefits renewal;
  • An amended resolution for the exchange of a City of Villa Rica property for a Downtown Development Authority property; and,
  • A contract with an agency to provide senior services.
