USHCC Congratulates ABC’s Jim Avila on Merriman Smith Award
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) congratulates Jim Avila, Senior National Correspondent and White House Correspondent for ABC News and Fusion, for being honored with the Merriman Smith Award for outstanding coverage by the White House Correspondents’ Association. Avila, who is being recognized for reporting from Cuba in December of 2014, will receive the award at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner taking place on April 25, 2015.
Jim Avila has received multiple Emmy and Murrow Awards for his coverage of breaking news. His reports on ABC and NBC have included events such as the September 11th attacks, the Washington D.C. sniper shootings, and real-time updates on the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq. Based in Washington, D.C., Jim Avila also covers Hispanic America, immigration reform, education, and unfolding political stories. Avila is also a contributor to “20/20,” specializing in law, justice, and consumer investigations.
“Over the years, Jim Avila has covered global events that will live in our memories forever, and the USHCC is thrilled to see him recognized for his outstanding work. Through his groundbreaking coverage in Cuba last year, Jim has helped chronicle and define the next chapter of American diplomacy for audiences around the world,” said USHCC President & CEO Javier Palomarez. “We congratulate Jim on this well-deserved accolade and look forward to celebrating his continued impact on national and international news.”
The Merriman Smith Award recognizes two journalists annually for outstanding presidential coverage of a single written, dictated, or broadcast story under deadline pressure. Jim Avila will be recognized for broadcast reporting on the release of U.S. contractor Alan Gross from Cuba. Alan Gross, who had been held captive for five years, was released and returned to the U.S. on December 17, 2014. The event is recognized as a first step in normalizing relations between the U.S. and Cuba.
