Prince Glover Hayes Helps Secure First-in-the-Nation Alabama TikTok Settlement

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Sept. 29, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall publicly recognized Prince Glover Hayes attorney Josh Hayes for his work on Alabama’s landmark settlement with TikTok. According to the agreement, Alabama will receive at least $100 million, with potential recovery of up to $300 million if specified conditions are met. The agreement also requires TikTok to implement significant new protections for teen users.

Settlement outcome and case background

Alabama alleged that TikTok designed its platform to encourage compulsive use, contributed to mental-health harms among young users, and misrepresented the platform’s safety. The case had been scheduled to go to trial on September 28. Alabama would have been the first state to bring these claims against TikTok to trial, but the matter instead concluded with what the Attorney General’s Office described as a first-in-the-nation settlement.

The financial terms of the agreement establish a $116.2 million base amount. The agreement also establishes a separate $183.8 million contingent payment pool that may vest based on qualifying agreements involving other states. Together, the provisions create the potential for Alabama’s recovery to reach at least $300 million.

Key changes aimed at protecting young users

The settlement’s terms include protections for teen users, including:

• A two-hour default daily usage limit for covered teen activity
• Nighttime access restrictions
• Limits on overnight and school-hour push notifications
• Stronger parental controls and age-assurance measures
• Productive pauses, content and feed protections, and restrictions on cosmetic procedure filters

Some requirements will take effect over specified implementation periods rather than immediately.

Prince Glover Hayes’ involvement

Marshall specifically thanked Hayes, along with Rhon Jones of Beasley Allen, Chief Counsel Katherine Robertson, and Consumer Protection Division attorneys Brad Chynoweth, Olivia Martin, Michael Dean, and Lindsay Barton for their work on the case. Others assisting on the case included Matt Glover and Blake Williams from Prince Glover Hayes and Kendall Dunson, Jeff Price, Matt Griffith, Elliot Bienenfeld, Elizabeth Walden, Connor Chase, Sara Grace Strength, Rylee Buzbee, and Miland Simpler from Beasley Allen.

Prince Glover Hayes was one of two private law firms selected to assist the State in the litigation, with Josh Hayes being appointed as a Deputy Attorney General.
