Winners are organizations developing and activating cost-effective, measurable community programs promoting wellness and disease prevention.

"Our society is confronting complex challenges related to the escalation in chronic diseases and the need to contain healthcare costs through improved population health and wellness, and the Lake Nona Institute is developing much-needed answers. What impressed us about the work being done at Lake Nona is not only the willingness and ability to innovate, but also the extensive use of data to document what works in achieving improved community health," said Mary R. Grealy, president of the Healthcare Leadership Council and moderator of yesterday's STREAM Health discussion titled, "Creating a Wellness Community."

Additional panel participants included Lake Nona Institute President Thad Seymour, Harvard Medical School Professor Ron Kessler, and Senior Vice President of Clinical Effectiveness at GlaxoSmithKline and Co-Chair of the Clinical Effectiveness Research Collaborative at the Institute of Medicine Ralph Horowitz.

"Through these partnerships, and our investments in wellness and prevention, we are creating an environment in which our residents, employees, and visitors can make everyday choices that lead to healthier and more productive lives," said Thad Seymour, president of the Lake Nona Institute. "Good health is everyone's business. We hope this becomes a model that others around the world can learn from and replicate."

Among the innovative wellness initiatives taking place at Lake Nona is the Lake Nona Life Project, a collaborative community research effort in partnership with Johnson & Johnson's Wellness + Prevention, Harvard Medical School, the Lake Nona Institute, Medical City Partners and the Lake Nona community. The Lake Nona Life Project is a multi-generational research study focused on community health and wellness. The registry-style study is a unique opportunity for business, universities, government, and medicine to unite and study wellness on a larger scale, while caring for individuals and communities, one person at a time.

"The Lake Nona Life Project team is excited to be working in this innovative community," said Ron Kessler, McNeil Family Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School and Chair of the Lake Nona Life Project Scientific Advisory Board. "By monitoring the integration of new technologies and cutting-edge lifestyle programs we will be getting a glimpse into the future of health and healthcare in the 21st Century."

Ralph Horwitz noted, "The continued pressure on health care costs and the need to improve the health and health care of the American people cannot be achieved through health system reform alone. We need a fully engaged community that encourages and supports health behaviors and healthy environments. Lake Nona is fast becoming a model for what is achievable when new technologies are integrated with innovative physical environments and cohesive social networks."

The Lake Nona Institute focuses on initiatives that accelerate innovation in health and wellness, education and sustainability. For more information on Lake Nona, please visit learnlakenona.com or lakenonainstitute.org.
