Company will invest in new office to attract and retain top talent
ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Opower (NYSE: OPWR), the global leader in cloud-based software for the utility industry, today announced that it will relocate its global headquarters to a new building in Arlington, Virginia in 2018. Opower will occupy the top three floors of 2311 Wilson Boulevard, a building to be constructed by Carr Properties over the next two years.
“We are excited to work with our partners to design what will be one of the most dynamic workplaces in the region,” said Alex Laskey, President and Co-founder of Opower. “It’s critical that Opower has access to a skilled workforce and is able to offer a compelling work environment. We look forward to continuing to call Arlington home as we work with our utility clients help build a clean energy future.”
As an industry-leader in employee benefits and work culture, Opower has designed the new headquarters with a host of new features. The office will feature an open, collaborative floorplan; outdoor balcony access on all three floors; an open company-wide cafeteria area and gathering space; and fully stocked kitchens on each floor. The building will also include an open roof deck; an integrated outdoor park; a fully equipped gym; and a staffed day care facility on the ground floor. Like Opower’s current workspace, the new office will be dog-friendly and feature state of the art video conferencing to connect Opower employees around the globe.
Opower has designed the new space to accommodate existing staff, and to position the company for significant future growth. The building is being designed to meet LEED certification requirements, and will be easily accessible by public transit including three different Metro lines, buses from all points in Virginia, and built-out bike paths. Construction will begin pending the upcoming execution of a lease agreement. The new building is approximately a quarter mile from Opower’s current location.
“Keeping Opower in Arlington County has been a high priority of my administration,” said Governor of Virginia Terry McAuliffe, who announced the news at an event at Opower’s current corporate headquarters. “This high-profile energy software company is growing rapidly and making a major impact on global challenges, and we are committed to further strengthening this important corporate partnership. The technology industry is booming in Virginia, and wins like this expansion help us continue to build on the momentum in this important sector as we grow, diversify and build a new Virginia economy.”
“We are excited for Opower to take full advantage of the unique workplace environment fit for a cutting edge company,” said Oliver Carr III, Chief Executive Officer of Carr Properties. “We can’t wait to see Opower employees meeting for lunch on our roof deck, relaxing in the park behind our building and enjoying the day care facility planned for our ground floor.”
This project was supported by a $1 million grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to Arlington County, approved by Governor McAuliffe. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership and its Virginia Jobs Investment Program will provide funding and services to support Opower’s employee training activities.
