OpenAssets Infrastructure Now Available to Banks in Their Own AWS Accounts
A deployment is designed to leave a bank's keys, data, network choice, and brand with the bank, while OpenAssets supplies issuance, compliance, and venue connectivity.
OpenAssets' network includes the world's largest exchange, ICE, the world's largest stablecoin issuer, Tether, the world's largest digital sports platform, Fanatics, as well as Mysten Labs, KraneShares, and many other leading institutions.
For a bank, the question is what stays under its control. An OpenAssets deployment is designed to leave four things with the bank:
- Keys. The bank generates and holds its own keys, inside its own AWS account.
- Data. Issuance, compliance, and asset servicing records run inside the bank's AWS environment. What goes on-chain is limited to the token itself and its transfers, on the network the bank selects.
- Network choice. The bank decides which network each asset lives on and settles on, across more than a dozen public and private chains.
- Brand. The bank issues under its own name.
OpenAssets supplies the infrastructure underneath. Issuance and lifecycle management covers stablecoins, tokenized deposits, bonds, equities, funds, and commodities. A compliance and transfer agent layer sets who may hold an asset and keeps the record of ownership. Venue connectivity links the asset to primary and secondary venues.
For a bank's technology and risk teams, OpenAssets holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for its own operations and has completed a SOC 2 Type 2 examination covering Security, Availability, and Confidentiality.
The alternative for a bank is a build. Building tokenization infrastructure from scratch can be a large IT project, and large IT projects have a hard record: a 2012 study by McKinsey and the University of Oxford of more than 5,400 such projects found that those with initial budgets above
On day one, the bank can issue its first asset on testnet. From the deployment in its own AWS account, the bank's team mints and burns supply, adds wallets to the allowlist, and transfers the asset between them. The operator's console shows live supply, the allowlist, and a log of every action with the user who took it. Risk, compliance, and operations teams see the full lifecycle run under the bank's own controls before the asset is issued in production, and the bank decides when that happens.
"A bank's first questions about tokenization are about control: where it runs, who holds the keys, who can see the data," said
