Nothing to celebrate this National Trucking Week, say drivers

BRAMPTON, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- On September 12, truck drivers will be calling out the Carney government’s response to rampant wage theft in trucking.

New measures to stop illegal employer violations of labour laws are misfiring, targeting and harming truck drivers while letting employers off the hook altogether. Drivers will be delivering this message at a rally and press conference outside of the office of John Zerucelli, Secretary of State for Labour.

Truck drivers play a crucial role in Canada’s economy, moving 90% of all consumer goods. National Trucking Week is about recognizing and appreciating the truck drivers who play an essential role in Canada’s economy and should be a key part of the government’s infrastructure strategy.

“We’re here to say the best way to appreciate truck drivers is to stop wage theft, end misclassification, and hold employers accountable for following our labour laws,” says Karanveer Singh, a driver with Justice for Truck Drivers, and a speaker at the September 12 news conference.

Truck drivers comprise 17% of Canada’s federally-regulated workforce, and yet 85% of all confirmed Canada Labour Code violations have been filed by truck drivers against their employers.

On September 12, at the news conference, drivers will share their stories about why federal government action to address these issues has been ineffective at best, and harmful to drivers at worst.

Truck drivers are holding a similar action in Vancouver, and drivers across the country will be calling on their local MPs to take action.
