Nisos CEO to Address DPRK Employment Fraud at Web Summit 2026
Session to Ask "Is There a Foreign Operative on Your Payroll," and Examine How Modern Hiring Processes Are Exploited to Infiltrate Organizations, Obtain Employment, and Fund North Korea
Nisos' research has exposed the scale and sophistication of these operations, which extend beyond conventional cybercrime to exploit the hiring process as a means of generating revenue for the North Korean regime, and potentially gaining access to corporate systems, intellectual property, and sensitive information. LaSalle's session will explore the tactics behind these schemes and the lessons organizations can apply to identify fraudulent candidates before they become an insider risk.
"Employment fraud has become a national security and enterprise risk issue, not simply a hiring problem," said LaSalle. "Our investigations have shown how organized these operations have become, how effectively they exploit gaps in traditional screening processes, and how AI is making it easier to create and maintain convincing false identities. Organizations need to look beyond whether a candidate's documents appear legitimate and determine whether the person behind the identity is who they claim to be."

Nisos Investigation Uncovers Industrial-Scale Employment Fraud

The investigation found that the cell submitted more than 166,000 job applications and participated in more than 21,000 interviews, securing at least 76 job offers between
Nisos also uncovered an organized infrastructure supporting the operation, including communications channels, performance-tracking dashboards, identity brokers, and
The investigation began in 2025, when a suspected DPRK operative applied for a remote AI architect position at Nisos. Rather than simply reject the application, Nisos conducted a controlled investigation, working with law enforcement to uncover the broader network and its methods.
The findings build on years of Nisos research into DPRK employment fraud, including investigations into fraudulent online personas, fake software development companies, and networks using professional portfolios and online platforms to make fabricated identities appear credible.
Why Traditional Hiring Checks Can Fall Short
Nisos' investigations highlight a fundamental challenge for organizations: confirming that a document, credential, or online profile exists does not necessarily establish that it belongs to the person presenting it.
DPRK-linked operatives have used stolen personal information, manipulated identity documents, fabricated employment histories, and coordinated reference schemes to create plausible candidate profiles.
These techniques make employment fraud difficult to address through conventional background checks alone. Detecting it can require connecting signals across an individual's digital footprint, professional history, contact information, and other independent sources, while examining inconsistencies that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Nisos Enables Organizations to Corroborate Identity
As organizations increasingly adopt AI and expand distributed workforces, the ability to corroborate identity and assess human risk before granting trusted access has become an increasingly important component of enterprise security. The lessons from Nisos' DPRK investigations helped inform the development of Identity Integrity, a capability within the company's Ascend™ platform designed to help organizations corroborate who job candidates and other individuals truly are.
Rather than relying solely on document verification or a single data point, the capability applies intelligence-led analysis to determine whether the available information about an individual is consistent and credible. It is designed to complement existing identity verification and background-check processes, helping organizations identify potential concerns earlier and determine when additional investigation may be appropriate.
By bringing investigative tradecraft into a scalable platform experience, Nisos aims to help organizations address identity risk across the workforce lifecycle, from pre-hire screening to employee investigations and broader workforce assessments.
About Nisos
