New Children's Book Maxine's Joy Celebrates Joy Through Adversity, including Alzheimer's

Proceeds to benefit Alzheimer's-related Causes and Honor a Mother's Legacy

ATLANTA, July 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Turning grief into giving is one of the most powerful ways to honor a loved one's memory. For philanthropy advocate Rena Olsen, that path has led to Maxine's Joy—a heartwarming new children's book inspired by her mother's life and joyful spirit.

Blending storytelling with purpose, Olsen's debut book is a tribute and a philanthropic initiative. All proceeds from Maxine's Joy will support Alzheimer's-related organizations.

The book tells the true story of Maxine, a woman whose life began as a child born into poverty in rural Oklahoma. Maxine's life was marked by hardship yet defined by her joy and resilience.

"To have known my mom was to experience her joy," says Rena. "You would never know that she endured significant adversity—growing up in poverty during the Dust Bowl, forced to work in the fields as a child, and ultimately, facing Alzheimer's Disease. Through it all, her joy somehow prevailed."

Illustrated by Kompal Rana, the book brings Maxine's story to life with warmth and whimsy. Kompal had to bring the image of baby and young Maxine to life as no photos exist of her during that time.

"Kompal's beautiful illustrations help soften the book's deep themes, making them approachable for young readers," Rena said.

The book also touches on historical moments in U.S. history, including The Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War II. Other lessons include family, illness, loss of a loved one, and heaven. A gentle touch of faith ties it all together.

"A diagnosis of dementia can be devastating for everyone," Olsen adds. "Children often struggle to understand what's happening. We must show them the way that love, joy, and our presence are the most valuable gifts we can offer."

Over seven million people and families are impacted by Alzheimer's disease, according to the Alzheimer's Association. In the U.S., it is ranked as the seventh cause of death for older adults (Alzheimer's Disease Fact Sheet, NIH.)
