NYU Langone Health Names Clinician-Scientist as New Chair of Psychiatry

NEW YORK, Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- NYU Langone Health has named William Gordon Frankle, MD, MBA, an established leader with a proven track record of success, as the new chair of the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Frankle most recently served as vice chair of the department, chief of psychiatry service at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and professor of psychiatry and will begin his new role as chair in September.

As chief of psychiatry service at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, Dr. Frankle has led the integration of Brooklyn's psychiatric service into the Department of Psychiatry while driving significant growth in clinical operations, quality, and financial performance. Under his leadership, the behavioral health program at the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone has grown into one of the largest in New York State, with approximately 165,000 patient visits annually. He also launched a new psychiatry residency program with an emphasis on community psychiatry and developed innovative clinical programs, including the Enhanced Treatment and Recovery program for patients with serious mental illness, which received the American Psychiatric Association's Silver Award for Psychiatric Services Achievement in 2024.

Dr. Frankle's appointment follows Charles R. Marmar, MD, completing his tenure as chair after 17 years of distinguished leadership. Dr. Marmar will continue his research as director of the Center for Precision Psychiatry  in the NYU Grossman School of Medicine faculty.

The Department of Psychiatry has achieved national and international recognition for its outstanding quality of care and training. It is ranked No. 8 in the country (tied) by U.S. News and World Report and No. 6 in the country for National Institutes of Health psychiatric grant funding, according to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. About William Gordon Frankle, MD, MBA

Dr. Frankle earned his bachelor's degree from McGill University and his medical degree from New York Medical College. He completed his residency in adult psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital, followed by a research fellowship in schizophrenia at the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University. He also holds a Master of Business Administration in medical management from the Isenberg School of Business at the University of Massachusetts.

Dr. Frankle has been a member of NYU Langone for 10 years and is a nationally recognized expert in schizophrenia and neuroreceptor imaging. His research uses positron emission tomography to investigate neurochemical abnormalities in schizophrenia, and his work has advanced understanding of dopamine and GABA transmission in the pathophysiology of the illness. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and is currently funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.
