MatSing’s new large-format, high-performance Luneburg Lens enables revolutionary satellite antenna configurations.
Luneburg Lenses enable a class of multibeam, wideband antennas able to transmit and receive signals simultaneously across a range of directions and frequencies - without the complexity and cost of conventional reflector dishes or phased arrays. MatSing's manufacturing innovation now makes it possible to produce advanced Luneburg Lenses at sizes and performance levels previously unavailable, unlocking new applications for satellite communications, ultra wideband connectivity, defense and radar.
Transformational Technology
Although the Luneburg Lens concept has been known for decades, manufacturing large-format, high-frequency RF lenses was a major engineering challenge, requiring extremely low-loss dielectric materials, precise permittivity control and tight dimensional tolerances. MatSing's unique manufacturing and materials overcome these challenges to empower scalable production of large aperture lenses exceeding 50 wavelengths, while maintaining high-gain multibeam performance, wideband capabilities, focused RF coverage and excellent beam quality.
The new large-format Luneburg Lenses are ideally suited to satellite communications, offering wide-angle coverage, high-gain wideband operation, multibeam capability, low loss and isotropic performance. These features enable a single lens antenna to simultaneously link and track multiple satellites across a wide field of view and multiple frequencies with high performance and reduced infrastructure configurations, empowering substantial savings in space requirements and investment costs.
The platform spans apertures from 0.5m to 2.4m, and frequencies from 1–30 GHz (L through Ka band), with gain exceeding 40 dBi at the top of each configuration's operating range. Applications include multi-satellite gateway antennas, LEO/MEO/GEO communications, satellite teleports, passive RF sensing, multifunction radar, radio astronomy, deep-space communications, ultra wideband wireless, and maritime, airborne and land-mobile SATCOM.
Sample configurations include:
- Wideband, 1–18 GHz (L–Ku) — 1.2m diameter — ideal for multi-band communications
- Wideband, 1–12 GHz (L–X) — 2.4m diameter — suited for long-range, low-frequency applications
- Ku/K/Ka, 12–30 GHz — 0.5m diameter — optimized for high-frequency satellite communications
Full frequency-versus-gain specifications are available on request.
“Even small material variations can introduce phase errors as aperture size increases, significantly reducing gain and beam quality. This MatSing manufacturing breakthrough overcomes these challenges, transforming the large-format Luneburg Lens from a laboratory concept into a practical engineering platform delivering superior performance and efficiency,” said Leo Matytsine, Executive Vice President of MatSing. “As satellite communications, defense sensing and advanced wireless infrastructure continue to evolve, RF lens technology has the potential to become a catalyst for the next generation of global connectivity.”
The large-format Luneburg Lenses will be available in next-generation MatSing LensSAT™ satellite antennas, with custom frequency ranges, aperture sizes and integration available. For more information, contact MatSing.
