Teamsters Sound Alarm on Bus Maintenance Backlog and Understaffing

MADISON, Wis., Aug. 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Teamsters Local 120, the sole bargaining representative for Metro Transit Madison workers, is speaking out against ongoing issues with the maintenance department and demanding answers from management.

There has been a consistent backlog of coach bus repairs and fleet inspections as required by the federal government, endangering the ability for buses to run their daily routes.

"We want our community to be able to get to school, work, and to all of the places that Madison has to offer, but things must change immediately at Metro Transit Madison to accomplish this," said Tom Erickson, President of Local 120. "Teamsters in the maintenance department deserve better than a faulty bus system that can't function due to mismanagement and inadequate staffing."

With only a few weeks before Madison public schools and the University of Wisconsin return for the school year, Teamsters mechanics are going above and beyond to prepare for the influx of passengers that will accompany students returning to campus.

Since December 31, 2024, these 400 essential public transportation workers in Madison have been working under an expired contract. Bargaining is scheduled to continue the week of August 11, but maintenance issues cannot wait until then to be addressed.
