MASSACHUSETTS TEAMSTERS DEMAND LAWMAKERS REQUIRE HUMAN OPERATORS IN ALL MOTOR VEHICLES

Union Leads Charge Against Waymo and Other Big Tech Firms' Reckless Expansion

BOSTON, June 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Teamsters and a union coalition gathered on Beacon Hill today to demand regulation and accountability for autonomous vehicle (AV) operators that are attempting to expand into Massachusetts.

Both at a rally outside of the state house and at a hearing in the Massachusetts General Court Joint Committee on Transportation, Teamsters called on lawmakers to pass S.2393/H.3669, which would require human operators in all AVs. Union members also called for the legislative body to kill S.2379/H.3634, a Waymo-sponsored bill that would hurt workers.

"The only reason Waymo and other AV companies invest in this technology is so they can get rich by destroying the livelihoods of millions of workers," said Tom Mari, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Joint Council 10 and President of Teamsters Local 25. "Our elected officials have a responsibility to support the middle class. They can do that by killing the Big Tech bill and requiring human operators in driverless cars and trucks."

Waymo's push to expand comes despite the fact that the company is being federally investigated, has issued multiple safety recalls, and was involved in hundreds of accidents throughout the country.

"Massachusetts is not a playground for Silicon Valley," said Steve South, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 25. "After today, I want to see Waymo turn around, drive right out of this state, and never come back."

Similar Teamsters-backed legislation is pending in Oregon and Texas. The California Assembly has already passed a bill this session requiring human operators in commercial vehicles.
