California facilities face ongoing requirements for hydrant flow testing and underground fire service maintenance

Fire hydrants and underground piping form an essential connection between a propertys water supply and systems including fire sprinklers, standpipes and fire pumps. The 2025 California Fire Code requires private fire service mains and appurtenances to be installed in accordance with NFPA 24 as amended by California. The code also requires private fire service mains and water tanks to be periodically inspected, tested and maintained. Private fire hydrants are identified for annual inspection and flow testing, while fire service main piping is subject to periodic inspection and five-year flow testing requirements.

Hydrant flow testing provides information about the available water supply under flowing conditions. During testing, technicians evaluate factors such as static pressure, residual pressure and water flow while observing the hydrant and associated equipment for operational deficiencies.
