New York, NY (PRWEB) May 06, 2015

David Sugarman spearheads a campaign to release Jonathan Pollard, who is serving a life term since his sentencing in March 1987 for one count of espionage after pleading guilty to conspiracy to deliver national defense information to a foreign government. As stated in http://www.ibtimes.com/israel-might-offer-palestinian-prisoners-obama-exchange-convicted-spy-jonathan-pollard-1094264 2.19.13

Pollard served as an Intelligence Specialist with the Naval Intelligence Command (NIC) and sold classified documents to the Israel government. To date, Pollard is the only American ever to receive a life sentence for passing classified information to an ally of the U.S. As seen in

"Jonathan is a man who admitted that what he did was wrong and he has served 28 years in prison," said Sugarman. "It was a different time in 1985 when this investigation began. I believe that he's long-since paid for his crime."

There has been continued support throughout the past 20 years for the release of Pollard. Support has come from U.S. Secretaries of Defense, bi-partisan members of Congress, members of the American Intelligence community, politicians and more. The supporters believe his punishment far outweighs the gravity of his crime. (As stated in The Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2014/03/31/jonathan-pollard-why-israel-wants-him-free-why-the-u-s-doesnt-and-what-might-happen-next/ dated 3.31.14)

"We shouldn't tolerate conspiracy against our government and even Jonathan admitted that he should pay for his crime. That said, we are talking about a man who turns 61 in August and is eligible for parole in November," said Sugarman. "The Israelis granted his citizenship, release him, revoke his U.S. citizenship, but let him go to Israel and live what is left of his life."

Although lobbyist and activists have called for Pollard's release in the past, Sugarman believes the time is right to revisit the topic and create a conversation that leads to his freedom. The #FREEPOLLARD campaign helps to create awareness about the cost to keep Pollard imprisoned and how long is adequate time served for such a defiance. Using @POLLARDFREEDOM, Sugarman plans to generate discussion culminating in Pollard's release.

Sugarman, who created and championed the efforts to return Kenneth Bae from North Korea to his family in the U.S., has had great success in driving conversation to affect change through social media and international press. During the #BringBaeBack campaign, Sugarman was a regular on CNN, worked with the family to garner additional press and even met with both U.S. officials and members of the DPRK Embassy in the U.S.
