John Hailer to Serve as Boston Public Library Interim Chairman

June 18, 2015 9:30 AM EDT

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Boston Public Library Board of Trustees today voted to appoint John T. Hailer, chief executive officer of Natixis Global Asset Management for the Americas and Asia, to serve as the Interim Chairman of the Boston Public Library Board of Trustees.

“As a life-long Bostonian, coming from a large family of modest means, I have personally benefited from the library’s services,” said Hailer. “It is an honor to serve in this role and to work with the library board and administrators to lead this fine institution during a time of transition.”

Hailer – a Boston native, born in Roslindale – was appointed to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Boston Public Library in March 2013. He has previously served as a member of the Finance and Audit Committee.

Hailer has a long history of community involvement in the city of Boston. He has served as the chairman of the New England Council Board of Directors for six years. “John has worked tirelessly on behalf of Massachusetts and the entire region to help advocate for an environment where businesses can grow, add jobs and make a greater contribution to the New England economy,” said James Brett, New England Council president and chief executive officer.

Hailer has served on the Board of Directors of The Home for Little Wanderers, the oldest continuous children’s charity in the United States, for more than 20 years, serving as chairman from 2005 to 2013. “John chaired the board through our $23 million capital campaign for the expansion of our Longview Farm residential treatment facility in Walpole. He did this in part through a down economy. The children who live with us at Longview Farm and elsewhere, who receive services at our clinics, who are taught at our schools – and their families – are better off today because of John’s business acumen, foresight and big heart,” said Joan Wallace-Benjamin, President and CEO of The Home for Little Wanderers.

Hailer has served on the board of the Boston Medical Center since 2009. “At BMC we have appreciated John’s wise counsel and sincere commitment to our mission of providing exceptional care without exception to all who come through our doors,” said Kate Walsh, president and CEO of Boston Medical Center. “I have no doubt that the Boston Public Library and the city will benefit from his leadership and dedication to advancing the quality of life and creating opportunities for all Bostonians.”

Hailer has served as the chairman of the Best Buddies Hyannis Port Challenge for the past two years. "John Hailer has proven to be a visionary leader through his commitment to hire individuals with special needs and his dedicated support of Best Buddies' global mission of friendship and social inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities," said Anthony Kennedy Shriver, founder and chairman of Best Buddies International. “Hailer's commitment to our cause has helped bring an even greater awareness to the infinite abilities people with intellectual disabilities possess, and in turn, an outpouring of support for the Best Buddies mission.”

Hailer also serves on the board of directors for the Berklee School of Music. He received his BA from Beloit College and is a former member of its Board of Trustees.
