Kazakhstan's pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2024, "Jerūiyq: Journey Beyond the Horizon," presents a visionary future where human and non-human entities merge into a reimagined utopia. Set against the backdrop of our postcolonial era and geopolitical turbulence, the exhibition calls for a reevaluation of often overlooked narratives, inviting visitors to delve into imaginative worlds, space exploration, futuristic rituals, and the interplay of topology and algorithms.

Hosted in the historic Museo Storico Navale, the exhibition showcases the evolution of utopian thought, decolonial futurism, spirituality, modernism, and cosmism in Kazakhstani art since 1979. The exhibition is a part of the 60th International Art Exhibition and aligns with the Biennale's theme, "Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere," curated by Adriano Pedrosa.

Exploring Ancient Legends and Modern Art

At the heart of this exhibition is the ancient Kazakh legend of Jerūiyq, a promised land kept alive through oral tradition. This mythical place represents a quest for knowledge and aspiration, a theme vividly captured in the works of the featured artists. The tales of Asan Kaigy, a steppe philosopher from the 15th century, tell of his attempts to lead nomadic people to utopian lands free from disease and hunger. The word "kaigy," translating to "sadness" in Kazakh, reflects this quest's emotional depth, echoed in the melancholic melodies of the kobyz and resonating through the numerous efforts to realize utopias on the Kazakh steppes.

A Journey Through Utopian Imagery

The exhibition traces the development of utopian imagery in Kazakh art from the 1970s to the present. Key works include:

• "Earth and Time. Kazakhstan" by Kamil Mullashev, envisioning Kazakhstan as a cosmic utopia.
• "Baikonur-2" by Sergey Maslov, representing early contemporary art in Kazakhstan.
• "Presence" by The2vvo (Eldar Tagi and Lena Pozdnyakova), a generative multi-channel audio installation created with artificial intelligence, exploring non-linear relationships with time and nature.

Alternative Narratives and Decolonial Futurism

"Jerūiyq: Journey Beyond the Horizon" moves away from Western-centric fantastical narratives that often depict militaristic scenarios of new weaponry and colonization. Instead, it seeks to uncover alternative stories from fragile cultures, offering untold tales of utopian worlds. With Kazakhstan's independence, its art has gained new momentum for decolonization and future reimagining, breaking free from Soviet censorship and metropolitan dictates.

A Diverse Array of Artistic Expressions

The exhibition features a rich collection of works where drones and robots intersect with spirits and sacred rituals in Anvar Musrepov's "Alastau." Nomadic culture finds expression in cosmic stations in "Mobile Block" by Saken Narynov, and visionary monumental paintings open portals to new realms in "New Child. Rebirth" by Yerbolat Tolepbay.
