Insights from the Career of Matt Choi, Founder of Certus Trading
Matt Choi is a professional trader with more than 20 years of experience operating in the financial markets. As a Chartered Market Technician (CMT), he specializes in trading stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), options, commodities, and financial futures. Matt is also the founder and proprietor of Certus Trading Inc., a Toronto, Ontario-based company dedicated to teaching others how to achieve consistent profits through the use of simple, practical trading techniques.
Certus Trading Inc. offers a variety of educational courses tailored to meet different needs, from monthly subscription programs to intensive workshops on high probability trades and commodity spreads. When he founded the company in 2011, Matt Choi's goal was to share his wealth of hard-earned knowledge and highly refined strategies to others. In the years since, he has helped hundreds of people succeed in building wealth through the financial markets.
Before creating Certus Trading, Matt Choi successfully turned around the fortunes of a floundering Hyundai dealership in Oakville, Ontario. In doing so, he increased the dealership's overall sales from $12 million to $25 million and its profits from $600,000 to $1.6 million. He eventually sold the dealership for a substantial sum to concentrate on his passion for trading.
Matt began trading in 2001 and initially struggled to find what he called a "perfect system." His fortunes changed in 2005 when he met his mentor, George Fontanills, who dispelled the notion of discovering a flawless system, and instead taught him the importance of adopting a winning mindset, as well as effective risk management. Since then, Matt's trading has been dependably profitable.
Recently, we sat down with Matt Choi to ask him some questions about his career in general and his experience with Certus Trading in particular.
Q: What inspired you to transition from running a successful car dealership to founding Certus Trading?
Matt Choi: For the entirety of my adult life, I've always had a passion for trading--even when I was running the Hyundai dealership. Back then, I would spend my days at the dealership and my nights playing the markets. Truthfully, I never stopped trading. As I went along, I learned a ton and revised my trading techniques to the point where I thought I had a lot of knowledge to offer other people. So, after I turned the car dealership around and achieved my goals there, I felt it was finally time to embrace my passion as a true vocation and launch a business based around teaching others how to use the markets to accumulate wealth for themselves. I'm happy to say that, at this point, Certus Trading has been up and running for thirteen years, which I consider to be undeniable evidence of its success.
Q: What key principles do you emphasize in your courses at Certus Trading?
Matt Choi: We stress the importance of three overall principles: cultivating a winning mindset, risk management, and focusing on specific markets. Within that framework, we teach practical methods that people from all walks of life can use to trade in real-time. Some of the specific courses we offer right now include Profit Scheduler, Big Move, and Advanced Options Strategy Blueprint, each of which can be of great benefit to anyone interested in optimizing their returns. But in the end, it's all about learning by doing and seeing the results come in firsthand.
Q: What's the most rewarding part of running Certus Trading?
Matt Choi: Seeing my students succeed is incredibly rewarding. When they share their wins and tell me how my strategies have changed their trading lives for the better, it gives me a tremendous feeling. It's actually hard to put into words. It reminds me why I started Certus Trading in the first place.
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in trading?
Matt Choi: I give the same advice to everyone. Start by focusing on learning about the markets and trying to truly understand them rather than chasing profits. Find a mentor, like I did, and pick their brain for the best advice they have. Also, don't be afraid to make mistakes. Provided you don't lose too big, mistakes can be your best teachers. Along those lines, I also recommend not investing any money you can't afford to lose--especially at the beginning, when you're just starting out. And always remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a successful trading career.
Q: How do you balance running Certus Trading with your own trading career?
Matt Choi: Achieving balance between my own trading career and educating others isn't too difficult, fortunately. The two endeavors compliment each other. As I learn more about the markets through my own trades, I'm able to translate that into lessons for my students at Certus. Teaching also keeps me on my toes, as I have to think quickly and critically when fielding questions from my students-some of the stuff they ask me is really observant and advanced! And what I love most is meeting other traders from around the world. Many of the people who sign up with Certus Trading are based in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. It's quite inspiring.
