Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer season, and many American consumers have shopping on the brain. According to the Memorial Day Spending Habits infographic, compiled from a recent Goodshop consumer survey, Americans are getting ready to spend at least $100 on Memorial Day-related sales items this season. From summer accessories to barbecue accouterments, there are a variety of ways that retailers can leverage deals and bargains, in order to connect consumers with the Memorial Day spirit.
"53% of consumers who plan to shop on Memorial Day will be looking for sales, both online and in-store. There is no doubt that having a Memorial Day sale is a boon for business this month, " said Erica Hennes, Director of Marketing at Goodshop. "With over 500,000 coupons and deals at over 30,000 merchants, Goodshop is the place to save money and support a good cause on Memorial Day."
In order to get a more quantitative understanding of consumer behavior over Memorial Day Weekend, the folks at Goodshop designed an easy-to-read infographic chock full of information.

Goodshop found that consumers will primarily begin shopping for Memorial Day about a week before the holiday. However, purchases that are specifically for Memorial Day itself, such as food, alcohol, and specific outfits (which the average consumer will spend about $60 on) will occur over the actual Memorial Day weekend. The big boon of the weekend will be food and alcohol. 80% of Americans plan to be involved with their food preparation in some way-- whether it be cooking at home, preparing a picnic, or barbecuing. Sales on raw food items at grocery stores should be up 44%, especially on staple BBQ supplies such as hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, chips, and soda. The average amount that will be spent on alcohol is $55. While the majority of consumers will be buying lighter beverages, such as beer (81%) and wine (47%)-- a good 20% still plan to go for the harder stuff: vodka, gin, and whiskey. In terms of Memorial Day Sales, consumers are primarily interested in scouting out deals for clothing, shoes, and houseware. In a surprising twist, very few consumers are interested in travel or automobiles-- which debunks popular myths surrounding those consumer interests.
About the survey:
This survey is part of The Goodshop Holiday Consumer Spending Survey Series. It was designed to gauge consumer behavior and shopping trends related to specific American holidays. The survey polled 200 consumers and was conducted by Survey Monkey from May 8th to May 9th, 2015. The consumer poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
