India Weighs Bitcoin Reserve as US Holds $20 Billion in Crypto

India might soon make its own Bitcoin reserve, following a push from Pradeep Bhandari, spokesperson for the ruling BJP party. On June 26, 2025, Bhandari called for a pilot program that would test whether holding Bitcoin makes sense for India's economy.

His timing couldn't be better. The US just turned 207,000 seized Bitcoins, worth more than $20 billion, into an official reserve after Trump signed an executive order on March 6. Meanwhile, Bhutan has been quietly mining Bitcoin with hydropower since 2021 and now sits on more than $1 billion worth.

"This isn't a reckless pivot," Bhandari wrote in India Today. "It's a calculated step toward embracing crypto's legitimacy."

But here's the weird part: India already taxes crypto at 30%, plus a 1% fee on every transaction over $115. Yet, there's no actual regulation. Traders pay huge taxes while operating in a legal gray zone. It's like charging admission to a theme park that doesn't officially exist.

While India debates, other countries are moving fast. The IMF now calls Bitcoin a capital asset. Three U.S. states allow public funds to be used to buy Bitcoin. Russia, China, and Brazil, India's BRICS partners, aren't waiting around for permission.

India has a big advantage - massive renewable energy capacity. Bhandari points out that India's green energy resources dwarf Bhutan's hydroelectric setup. The country could establish sustainable Bitcoin mining operations that are environmentally responsible while generating revenue.

The investment field is gearing up for the upcoming price movements, with seasoned investors seeking the best options to buy. Crypto analyst Alan Draper recently ranked the best crypto to buy using hard data, looking at tech, real-world use cases, market cap, and community strength.

Why would India want a Bitcoin reserve? Simple math. Only 21 million Bitcoins will ever exist. You can't print more like regular money. Tim Draper, the billionaire who invested early in Tesla and Skype, still thinks Bitcoin will hit $250,000 by the end of 2025. Even conservative estimates suggest major upside.

CoinDCX CEO Sumit Gupta backs Bhandari's proposal. "Crypto is more than just a financial instrument," he said. "It's geopolitical, economic, and strategic."

But India needs to fix its crypto rules first. Right now, the government takes 30% of your profits but won't tell you if what you're doing is legal. That's pushing talent and money to some friendlier countries. Better rules would protect investors and help legitimate businesses grow.

India has everything going for it - a young population, tech talent, and startup culture. But without action, other countries will lock in first-mover advantages.

Bhandari suggests starting small with a pilot program. Test the waters. See what works. No need to bet the farm right away.

"India stands at a turning point," Bhandari added. "A good Bitcoin strategy, perhaps a reserve pilot, could strengthen economic resilience and project modernity."

The clock's ticking - and as more countries turn to Bitcoin, India faces a choice: lead, follow, or get left behind.
