CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Oct. 08, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Market Updates News Commentary - Hypersonic and high-speed programs are multiplying, but the places to test them in real atmospheric conditions have not kept pace. Traditional wind tunnels run for seconds and are oversubscribed, which is why reusable flight-test platforms are drawing attention. Starfighters Space, Inc. (NYSE American: FJET) says it has received its first flight hardware for its Wind Tunnel in the Sky™ program, built to support reusable Mach 2+ testing. Companies in the high-speed and defense backdrop include Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq: KTOS), Rocket Lab Corporation (Nasdaq: RKLB), AeroVironment, Inc. (Nasdaq: AVAV) and Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE: LMT).
Key Takeaways
- Starfighters Space says its first flight hardware has been completed, manufactured under a production agreement with Italian engineering company Robby Moto Engineering S.R.L. ("RME") for its Wind Tunnel in the Sky program.
- The components, being delivered to the company's base at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, will be assembled into two modular underwing flight articles, each 3.65 meters long and 178 millimeters in diameter, compatible with the company's existing F-104 underwing pylon systems.
- The company says the hardware will support an initial planned customer deployment for a major commercial aerospace customer, which it has not named.
- Next steps, per the company: assembly in Florida, ground handling and processing, aircraft integration tests and captive-carry flight evaluations before supporting future customer missions.
- The company describes the platform as adaptable for hypersonic technology testing, sensor and avionics testing, and extended-duration microgravity payloads, and says the data will support development of its STARLAUNCH™ air launch system.
What Starfighters Reported
Starfighters Space operates what it describes as the world's only commercial fleet of flight-ready Mach 2+ supersonic aircraft. In its news release, the company said the hardware was manufactured by RME under a production agreement and is part of a phased approach to expanding what its F-104 aircraft can do. The company lists three target uses: testing hypersonic technologies, designs and advanced materials; testing advanced sensors, avionics, communications equipment and electronic warfare systems; and providing extended-duration microgravity conditions for scientific payloads.
The assembled flight articles use a form factor based on a proven military air-launch vehicle (basically a missile system). The architecture includes interchangeable nose sections, tail assemblies, fin configurations and internal payload compartments, which the company says allows rapid adaptation for different customer missions while keeping a proven external aerodynamic profile.
"Completing our first flight hardware represents an important step toward building the capabilities that support our long-term commercial strategy and advancing our work with a major commercial aerospace customer," said Tim Franta, CEO of Starfighters Space. "Our Wind Tunnel in the Sky is designed to enable testing of advanced technologies through sustained Mach 2+ flight, extending testing beyond the seconds-long runs typical of traditional wind tunnels. The flight data and operational experience generated through this program will also support our continued development of the STARLAUNCH air launch system."
"Using a proven aerodynamic configuration allows us to focus on payload integration, flight testing and mission execution rather than developing an entirely new external flight body," said Piercarlo Ciacchi, Chief Pilot of Starfighters Space. "The modular design gives us the flexibility to support a wide range of customer requirements while maintaining predictable flight characteristics throughout our development program."
The Italian Connection
RME's AVIO Division, based in Casalmaggiore, Italy, produces precision components for high-performance aircraft, urban air mobility systems and motorsport vehicles, and previously developed a fuselage-mounted video and telemetry system for Starfighters' in-flight payloads. Several aircraft in the Starfighters fleet were previously operated by the Italian Air Force, where Ciacchi flew F-104s as an active-duty pilot. Italy was the last nation to operate the F-104, retiring its fleet from military service in 2004. In 2023, Ciacchi flew one of the company's aircraft during the Italian Air Force Centennial celebration in Rome.
Starfighters flies its F-104s from Kennedy Space Center and the Midland International Air & Space Port in Texas. The company previously announced the Wind Tunnel in the Sky platform in July.
Why Test Capacity Matters to the Sector
Hypersonic flight is deep in a costly research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) phase. Airframes, propulsion systems, thermal protection materials, sensors, and countless other components must be tested again and again in laboratories, wind tunnels, and flight. Until now, flight testing has largely meant single-shot, pass-or-fail demonstrations that take months or years to prepare and execute. Starfighters offers a different approach: a highly reusable and far more affordable platform for flight-testing critical components and subsystems at Mach 2.2. Many of the performance risks in these technologies can be retired at supersonic speeds, before programs commit to expensive hypersonic tests.
The companies below are the ones building and buying the high-speed systems that need testing. They are not customers of Starfighters, and nothing in this article suggests otherwise.
Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq: KTOS) reported second quarter 2026 revenue of $458.8 million, up 30.5% year over year with 19.1% organic growth, and Q2 bookings of $492.2 million. Defense Rocket Systems led its government segment with 50.2% organic growth, and the company raised full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $1.750 billion to $1.810 billion.
Rocket Lab Corporation (Nasdaq: RKLB) reported record second quarter revenue of $234 million, up 62%, and backlog of $2.36 billion, up 137%. It said Neutron Stage 1 tank production remains aligned with a Q4 2026 pad delivery target, announced plans to acquire Iridium Communications, and guided third quarter revenue to $250 million to $265 million with an adjusted EBITDA loss of $17 million to $23 million.
AeroVironment, Inc. (Nasdaq: AVAV) reported fiscal 2027 first quarter revenue of $480.5 million, up 6%, with $1.5 billion in funded backlog, up 37%, and a net loss of $5.1 million compared with a loss of $67.4 million a year earlier. It guided fiscal 2027 revenue to $2.125 billion to $2.225 billion.
Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE: LMT) reported second quarter sales of $20.1 billion, up 11%, diluted EPS of $7.94 and a record backlog of $230 billion, and raised its 2026 outlook to approximately 8% sales growth and free cash flow above $7 billion.
The scale gap is the point. These are established companies with large backlogs and revenue. Starfighters is a small public company, and its results and prospects are not comparable.
What to Watch Next
The company's stated milestones are assembly of the two flight articles in Florida, ground handling and processing, aircraft integration tests and captive-carry flight evaluations, followed by the initial planned customer deployment. The company has not given dates for these steps.
Investors should weigh what is not yet settled. The hardware has been delivered but not assembled or flown. The customer is unnamed and the company has not disclosed contract terms, values or timing. The platform is a development program, and the company's own forward-looking statements point readers to the risk factors in its most recent Form 10-K and other SEC filings.
