Fun for the young in the city

Fromfreeskate clinics and basketball sessions togaming tournamentsandaworkshop forbuddingentrepreneurs, the City of Sydney ishosting a series ofexciting events to celebrateYouthWeekfrom 11to 21 April. 

Heldeach year,Youth Weekis home to activitiesorganised by young people, for young people, in communities across thecountry. This year’s theme is ‘Express. Empower. Get loud!’. 

With many events coinciding with school holidays, Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO, said there is a range of activities for 12 to 24 year-olds toenjoy. 

“So much of what we do is focused on making Sydney a great place to study, work and live,notonlynow butwell into the future,” the Lord Mayor said. 

“We want an inclusive, connectedand engagedcommunity inourcity, andhosting a whole lot of fantastic events in partnership with young peopleisone way to create just that. 

“Lots ofyoung people livein inner Sydney,andwe hopeyou enjoy this year’s program of events.” 

LocalYouth Week festival highlights include: 

• YouthXpressat Redfern Community Centre on Friday 12 April, featuring an afternoon of free music, food,askate clinic and deck art sessions,asilent disco andabusiness and employment workshop. Groups that provide services to young people willalso attendto answer questions and distribute resources. 

• Young Gamers take Customs Houseon Thursday 18 April, a free evening of gaming for16 to 24 year-oldswith arcade games, Mario Kart, a Ruins of Sydney miniatures tournament, giant chess, music and more. 

• Free basketball sessionsat Perry Park Recreation Centre in Alexandriafor 12 to 18year-olds on Thursday 11 April.Youcan alsojoin a free3 v 3 basketball tournamentfor12 to 18 year-oldswith food and entertainment at Peter Forsyth Auditorium in Glebe on Friday 19 April.  

• afreecommunitybarbecuefor young peopleat Redfern Community Centreon Thursday 11 April. 

• the Betty Makin Youth Awardsat Redfern Town Hall on Tuesday 16 April, whichrecognisethe achievements of young people, youth workers and youth service workers. 

• aspecial curated list of titles from theyoung adult collectionput together by our libraryteam.
