Fitch: Investment Boosts Dominican Republic Construction Sector
BOGOTA, Colombia--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Construction activity in the Dominican Republic remains above the rest of the economy, favored by private and public investment recovery, according to a new Fitch Ratings report. Foreign investment in hotel projects and development of residential projects has boosted construction activity over the past two years.
'Incentives granted by the Trust Law in 2011 have given an additional push to the development of low-cost residential projects,' said Jose Luis Rivas, Associate Director in Fitch's Latin America Group. 'A sustained increase in tourist inflows and occupancy levels close to 80% have driven the development of hotel projects.'
In Fitch's opinion, building materials companies have benefited from this cycle. Nonetheless, these companies face the challenge to improve their positioning to withstand competitive pressures from low cost imported products while maintaining conservative capital structures.
