Fattah Statement in Support of the Iran Nuclear Agreement

WASHINGTON, Sept. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), a Senior Member on the House Appropriations Committee, today issued the following statement in support of the Iran Nuclear Agreement: 

"In 2005, I met with experts at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna to be briefed on Iran's nuclear program.  Since that visit, I have been committed to preventing Iran from further developing its nuclear capability.  After an in-depth and extensive review of the Iran Nuclear Agreement, I believe this historic deal is the most effective means to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.  Not only does the agreement keep Iran from developing the raw materials necessary to create a nuclear bomb, it also ensures that they will be unable to institute any covert weapons program for the next 10 to 15 years.

"This is a sound deal based on verification. As a result of the mix of international monitoring, inspections, and incentives contained within the agreement, the United States puts itself in the best possible position to keep Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.  These provisions include giving the IAEA unprecedented access to Iranian facilities, sustained surveillance of Iran's uranium mines and centrifuge production areas, and other mechanisms that mandate transparency and compliance.  Moreover, if Iran backtracks on any of the provisions within the agreement, the United States has the option to re-impose sanctions.
