Hall explains that a well-crafted CTA can significantly increase click-through rates, moving customers forward in their registration, information gathering, subscription, or buying journey.
“A strong CTA tells your audience exactly what to do next,” says Hall. “To inspire action, your CTA must convey a sense of urgency. You should speak directly to your audience’s interests, so the CTA feels relevant and irresistible.”
To ignite audience interest and action, Hall says marketers must conduct thorough target customer research to clarify wants, needs, and expectations. This, he says, can be accomplished through surveys, and gleaned from website analytics and social media interactions. Once a customer persona is developed, Hall says marketers should A/B test various CTA wording, design, and placement options within the email to determine which version yields the best results.
Regardless of the complexity of a company’s email software, all products allow the user to blend copy with design elements and a customized, correctly linked CTA. This means that a proper layout, with the first CTA inserted toward the top of the email and the final CTA appearing at the bottom, can produce significant results. For maximum impact, the CTA should stand out with eye-catching colors and clear, actionable language that aligns with the goal of the email.
Hall reminds business owners and marketers to think mobile first when designing an email because most people today check their email on their smartphones and designs that appear clear and compelling on a computer will perform differently on different devices. Hall also advises readers to ensure their emails comply with CAN-SPAM regulations and to be transparent about data collection practices to maintain audience trust.
