Debut Memoir Reflects on the Many Realities That Shape a Life

Author takes readers on a journey through memory, choice and chance

TOPEKA, Kan., Nov. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- A new literary memoir shares a glimpse into what it was like growing up in the 1960s while navigating major life turmoil and personal reflection. It also explores the subtle choices and unpredictable events that alter the course of an individual's lifetime.

In "PINBALL: Remembrances of a Flaneur," by Marshall Barber, readers are provided an autobiographical look at Barber's experiences coming to terms with his sexuality, navigating psychological turmoil and finding refuge in the unpredictable world of pinball, a game that becomes a metaphor for life's random rewards and reversals of fortune. Set against the cultural backdrop of the 1960s and the decades that follow, the narrative moves between lived experience and alternate realities as the text examines personal character and the consequences of choices made.

"I wrote this book to explore the many realities that can exist within a single life," said Barber. "PINBALL moves through decades of experience, asking readers to consider how differently a life might unfold based on the choices we make."

With a rock 'n' roll DJ for a father, the upbringing exposed the narrator to a constant stream of personalities and experiences, shaping a lifelong tendency to observe and wonder. Through a career spanning state politics and real estate, the story details being involved in people's lives in an immersive way. Barber shares about a near-fatal car accident, a Kansas tornado, political intrigue, a charismatic politician and an addicted painter struggling to reclaim her art.

"One of the questions I found most compelling was what becomes possible when two people are drawn to one another but choose not to have an inappropriate relationship," said Barber. "Sometimes, the most interesting story is the one that happens because we make a different choice".
