Congressman Fattah Statement on June Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, July 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), a Senior Member on the House Appropriations Committee and lead Democrat on the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies, issued the following statement on the June 2015 jobs numbers released today:
"Today's jobs report is welcome news to our growing economy. The unemployment rate dropped to 5.3% and the American economy added a healthy 223,000 private sector jobs last month. These June job gains extend our nation's longest streak on record of private sector job growth—now at 64 months.
"Seven years ago, we watched as the economy shrank, with employers cutting more than one million jobs in 2008 alone. Now, the country is seeing the results of President Obama's leadership and strong economic policies. After voting for the President's stimulus proposal—The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009—during his first term in office, we are now witnessing sustained economic growth, returning more people to work, and creating an impressive number of jobs since the recession.
"Still, there is more to be done. Congress must come together in a bipartisan fashion to pass bills like the Urban Jobs Act, legislation I introduced that was signed into law last year, and is helping to ensure that our young people are prepared to succeed in the workforce. We must find common ground on policies that will build a skilled American labor market and ensure that every individual who wants a job can find one."
